Styrian Spa Country

The hot thermal springs in the eastern part of Styria have given rise to the name of this holiday region: Steirisches Thermenland, or Styrian Spa Country. Here, in this warm and friendly place, you sense that the south starts here.

The thermal springs here extend across an area from Bad Waltersdorf to Bad Radkersburg, to the southeast of the regional capital, Graz. It is a paradise for connoisseurs, gourmets and health-seekers, an oasis of health and wellbeing in Styria.

History

At one time drillings were carried out in this region to look for oil. But instead of oil, they found hot water, healthy, beneficial thermal spring water from depths of up to 3,000 metres. It is the healing powers of this ancient water source that the Styrian Spa Country taps into today.

In recent years five large wellness and health centres have been built in this region, all offering guests a wide variety of opportunities for leisure, adventure and relaxation. These centres are located in Bad Waltersdorf, Bad Blumau, Loipersdorf, Bad Gleichenberg and Bad Radkersburg.

A land of epicurean delights

The mild climate in this hilly landscape is what makes the region one of the most fertile and productive in Austria. Here the moist Mediterranean climate zone meets the dry winds from the Hungarian Puszta. Not surprisingly, the region now also boasts a reputation as a place to enjoy epicurean delights, as well as spa treatments. Perhaps the most famous of the regional specialities are Styrian wine and pumpkin seed oil.
